SKY HARBOR RESTAURANT – LAKE GEORGE, NY

George McGowan established the Sky Harbor Restaurant in 1936 at the corner of Beach Road and Canada Streets in Lake George.   Also known as the Sky Harbor Tavern, it stood at the center of the village where the Visitor’s Center is located today.  It was known for its view of Lake George and a large circular bar in the center of the room.

Outside of Matchbook:

Father Isaac Jogues, on May 29, 1646 was on his way to the Mohawk Country, to perfect a treaty.  He arrived at the outlet of the lake in a canoe and named his discovery ‘Lake of the Blessed Sacrement.’  The lake had been called by the Iroquois Indians ‘Andia-ta-roc-te’ (Tail of the Lake).  The place where Lake Champlain closes, Lake George flows into Lake Champlain through a narrow stream.  On Aug. 28, 1755 Gen. Johnson marched to the Lake and changed the name to Lake George in honor of King George of England…
